The Instrument

Twists and turns

Shaving away

What doesn't belong

From square to round

Exposing the heart

And reaching a purpose

Slender and smooth

Shiny and colorful

Ready to communicate

Sue Camilleri

The Chippewa Teacher's Basket

By the banks of the green bay

She cut the reeds just so.

Slit them open, smoothed flat

And formed this basket.

Squat and round it sits

The reeds plaited just so.

Fitted with the lid

To hold these words.

You blessed her hungry child

With McGuffey and math, just so.

The metrics of the white man's world

And she made you this basket.

In memory of EMB, Patty Nolan
